Large Piazza in the Old City of Jerusalem

In the Old City of Jerusalem there is no large piazza which might serve as a forum and focus among the narrow streets of the most famous old city in the world. The chosen site for such purpose was the huge antique water reservoir, called the “Sultan’s Pool” by Arabs and “The King Hezekiah Pool” by the Jews. Our office prepared a planning which amplified the special atmosphere of the Christian Quarter of the Old City, renewing all the buildings around the square and transforming the garbage site closed to public access, as is now into a beautiful piazza. Without any solid building within the compound, all around was adapted to tourist and recreation atmosphere. Commerce, Restaurants, Café shops and other attraction, could be the gathering and meeting point of all the pilgrims, visitors and citizens of Jerusalem. In spite of a cooperation with the Municipality of Jerusalem, the ‘Awqaf”-The High Muslim Council and part of the inhabitants of the old city, the difficulties of ownership and of political nature, blocked the project. The Old City of Jerusalem Piazza, already started to get into motion and to receive the international cultural community’s applause. What a pity…
