Austrian Hospice was built by the Emperor Franz Josef in the middle of XIX century. It is situated in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Today it is a guesthouse for pilgrims and other visitors as well as a cultural center. It belongs to the Austrian Catholic Church. The actual project concerns the construction of a dormitories’ complex for volunteers from Austria and the Rector’s apartment. Another part of this project is an underground archeological site that will be open for the public. The authorities’ regulations of archeology and conservation are very strict. The working conditions are extremely difficult due to the restricted access to the site and the security regulations. The planning’s approval lasts already for several years and hopefully the project will be finished at the end of 2017.
